I have been buying pall mall cigs for along time, but recently our state has made law to prevent fires in hone so they put a retardent in the paper to put out cig if let standing. No one knew if it was a dangerous chemicla besides the trillions of other crud materials they used.
When i smoked those cigs i hacked and had a sore throat for along time.
One day a gas station near buy sold gambler tobacco and i bought a bag of ulta light and tubes. Oh my what a wonderful enjoyment that was, fresh tobacco with a nice taste and no coughing or hacking.
It burns gr8 and smokes well. I did the math and figured out i am paying a bit more than if i purchased online, which i will do after this is gone but i am paying 69 cents a pack versus $3.52 a pack.
Im a happy camper!!!
I have smoked Benson and Hedges Menthol for 20+ years. Like Clif, I had the same experiences as well as my father who has smoked the same for over 40 years. I switched to Premier Menthol Tubes with Midnight Special tobacco, partly because of the increased taxes.
Recently, I ordered a new roller, the EXP1000 with a sample of the American Thrust Menthol and a box of Windsail Tubes. The combination is outstanding, smoother than B&H has ever been and not overpowering. Alas, I finally find something that really makes me happy and yet another freedom of choice is being taken away from me thru exorbitant taxation. Conform or go broke.
Clif sed: “made law to prevent fires in hone so they put a retardent in the paper”
Yessir, they sure did and the retard they put in it was C. Everett Koop, remember our good ol’ long gone Surgeon General? In his wonderous, obscured mind he figured that with a mere 635 other various chemicals in PROCESSED tobacco, what would another 3 hurt!? (The compound used for the retardant is sprayed on the tobacco AND mixed in the paper mash)
I have rolled my own for nearly 30 years and it wasn’t a matter of price way back as much as reading a comprhensive study on manufactured tobacco products in a college chemistry course.
I suppose, to be fair to the big 5 tobacco companies, I should mention that only around 10 chemicals are ADDED to the tobacco after harvest when used for premade, manufactured cigarette products. The various other 620 sum odd are measurable residues from herbicides, fertilizers and pesticides absorbed into the fiberous matrix of the tobacco plant during it’s growing cycle. In most cases these chemicals are less than 1/ppm (part per million) and a lot of hype was put on this during the 80’s and 90’s by anti-tobacco lobbyists attempting to show the “dangers” of smoking.
By comparison, nearly all of these same chemicals are found in our produce grown by the agricultural industry. (Naturally the anti’s leave this out of their hype!) Fruits and vegetables, governed by the USDA and FDA are subject to the vast number of “health” laws and requirements that also oversee tobacco. Basically if we were to have genuinely “safe food” we would all have to grow it ourselves, which isn’t a bad idea, just a very unapproachable venue due to Metropolis, USA. There is, however, a push by several prominent groups to make rooftop/street side garden a part of new developments in urban areas for cleaner air…maybe some good will come out of it in 20-30 years.
I’m glad you Fellows of the Loyal Order of RYO have found a new bliss! Keep on rolling!
One day I noticed a strange taste in my cigs and they were hard to keep lit. Came on the Net to see what was going on and sure enough the GOV has screwed things up again with their fire safe cigs. Ya right, these FS cigs burn unevenly and are dropping coals in my lap all day.
So I too am starting to ryo, used to many many years ago. Started researching machines, tubes, tobac, and then I see the GOV is one step ahead of me again with a 2500% increase in ryo tobacco, from $1/lb to $25/lb. I see they are also going to tax our rolling papers !! Insane what they are doing to us !!
I’ve looked all over the net and this is the only place I read about smokers who are complaining about the new fire safe cigs and how they are terrible.
Well, hopefully ryo will work out for me. I’ve smoked Marlboro Lights 100s for 40 years, switched to Menthols recently due to the firesafe cigs. I bought a Top-O-Matic rolling machine, 5lbs Thrust menthol tobac, ZigZag 100mil tubes, and a dozen or so 1oz samples.
Next up I will be growing my own tobacco, these taxes can go to hell.
i am tired of smoking the harsh additives and also the much higher cost of pre packaged cigs i am fixing to order that really nice premier injector and some golden harvest light and since i was disabled at work time isnt a problem with me heck i even got my wife to climb on board just from showing her the comments about the additives in tailor mades keep up the good work getting the information out there ryo forever!
I was one of the co-founders of a smoking program back in September of 1997 and we marketed a blend of chemical and additive free smokes from an Indian reservation in North Carolina. This blend was developed by an Executive VP of Marlboro and when they told him to get his chemical free junk out of their since the smokers needed the over 500 chemicals they added. He gave the blend to us and we sent out cartons around the country and asked the people to pass them out and get the opinion of their friends and report back to us. They all called, emailed of Faxed us back saying it was the best smoke they had had. He quit Marlboro and came to work with us also as a consultant. We were selling 4 cartons delivered via USPS Priority mail for less than $100 but with all of the restrictions and now the higher prices on the tax we decided to close up the mail order portion so I needed to find a new supplier. I found this site on an internet search and am very happy so far. I ordered about 8 pounds to beat the price increases and am waiting for that order to be processed and shipped now.
just began rolling my own here in NY. saves me 50 bucks a week. lousy bums taxing everything. like the song says: walk too much they will tax your feet.
Well, this is my first trip to the RYO palace, I can’t believe that in the USofA we are taxed to the point of desparate measures. If anyone can help a girl out here with which way to go at this,I sure would appreciate it. There’s as many choices as there is taxes………I smoke generic light 100’s………help? Anybody? Thanks
You will also need a cigarette machine that makes 100mm cigarettes,
the easiest to use is the PREMIER SUPERMATIC or the TOP-O-MATIC
but you may want to try the least expensive to give it a try, PREMIER QUICKFILL
Allot of people prefer the EXP1000 - NEW which is reasonably priced.
Machines are a matter of taste and experience and many people end up trying a few different ones before they find one they like.
14-16 ounces of tobacco makes about 2 cartons, 400 cigarettes. So you will need 2 boxes of tubes for every 14-16 ounces of tobacco.
If you use the sample program, every sample makes about 20 cigarettes, so every 10 samples you will need about a box of tubes.
after taking all of the Admin. advise, I’m very happy with all that I tried. I did get the EXP1000 machine & it’s as easy as I think I’m going to get. I just made my second order & thank God that with all that’s going on with our smokes, I’ve found a way to continue & not have to quit due to the cost! Although it doesn’t make me any less pissed off over it! Thanks for all your help!
I’m in FL and have been a long time RYO smoker. Nothing fancy, no tubes or rolling machines. I can’t even find my RYO tobacco around here because of high cost, retailers won’t even stock it. I’ll keep trying websites and friends ou of state. It’s like Prohibition, guys!
Hey guys this new tax is absolutely RIDICULOUS, but I read a great article today! It says that because of the new RYO tax, tobacco companies are now making pipe tobacco (much less taxed) that is the same s RYO tobacco. Go to your local tobacco shops and ask them which pipe tobaccos were made to be similar to RYO tobaccos, and save a ton of money for yourselves!!!!!! Admin please help me out and save me the trip to the local tobacco store, and I’ll buy from your website instead! I hope this helps some people out, and take a puff for me. -Louis
